Birdloft

Birdloft was designed for the 2023/24 Rilegno Contest.

Rilegno is an environmental consortium for the collection, recovery and recycling of wooden packaging. Because recycling and reuse are in their DNA, Rilegno hosts a yearly competition prompting students and designers to rethink packaging. For the 23/24 contest the goal was to create something novel using only the pieces from a single common fruit crate and additional connective hardware.

The Rosso Pomodoro crate was chosen from a local market for its robust components and Italian heritage, and despite its signs of moisture warping. The decision to make a birdhouse out of the components came from the idea of returning the materials to nature.

Birdloft offers two homes in modern fashion, suitable for common bird species found in central Europe.
